In the process of using cutting fluid, a lot of friction and high temperature are produced between cutting fluid and metal workpiece, cutter and debris, which results in an oil mist problem. The oil mist will affect the environment of metal processing workshop and the respiratory health of people.


The formation of oil mist in metal cutting fluid can be attributed to two mechanisms: atomization and evaporation.:


1.Atomization is a process in which mechanical energy is converted into droplet surface energy. It is mainly due to the exciting impact of the liquid on the fixed and rotating units in the machine tool system, which is broken and forms small droplets floating in the working environment.


2. Evaporation is caused by a large amount of heat generated in the cutting area, which is transferred into the cutting fluid so that its temperature is significantly higher than the saturation temperature, and then boiling occurs on the solid-liquid contact surface and generates steam. The air then condenses with small droplets or other particles in the surrounding air to form an oil mist.


The following three types of oil mist can be produced during metal cutting:


1. Clean oil mist generated by jet impact, free of solid dust


2.Oil mist containing grinding dust produced by metal cutting fluid jet during grinding


3. Smoke caused by evaporation or burning due to high temperature of heating or high-speed cutting


factors affecting the formation of cutting fluid:


1. Affected by the shape, size and pressure of the nozzle: the shape, size and number of holes of the oil nozzle have a great influence on the quality, shape and pressure of the spray liquid, thus affecting the generation of the oil mist of the metalworking liquid.


2. Effect of cutting fluid quality: in addition to the performance of cutting fluid itself, the effect of cutting fluid viscosity on oil mist is the most obvious. The less the viscosity of cutting fluid is, the greater the oil mist is. Of course, if the viscosity is too large, it will also affect the use of cutting fluid.


It is recommended to use some environmentally friendly cutting fluid, micro cutting fluid with oil mist, micro lubricating oil, etc.
