Exxon Mobil shut down its Beaumont, Texas, petrochemical plant today because of flooding caused by Tropical Depression Imelda. The facility includes the world’s largest polyalphaolefin source – a plant with capacity of 146,000 metric tons per year.

Otherwise the storm appeared to have little impact on facilities supplying the lubricants industry, despite flooding that stretched from New Orleans to Houston. More than 42 inches of rain fell in Beaumont. ExxonMobil spokesman Jeremy Eikenberry advised around 4:30 p.m. EST that plant personnel had “completed a safe and systematic shutdown of its units.”

ExxonMobil’s fuels refinery at the same location continued to operate.

The Gulf Coast has one of the hemisphere’s highest concentrations of Base Oil and Lubricant Additive facilities supplying the lubricants industry. The region produces 22.6 million barrels of base oil during the first six months of 2019.
