Common problems and solutions in the use of 5 commonly used industrial lubricating oils

June 08, 2023

First. Common problems and solutions of hydraulic oil

1. What are the reasons for hydraulic oil particle pollution? What are the hazards? What are the ways to prevent it?

1) Reason
There are two reasons for hydraulic oil particle pollution:
One is brought in from outside, and the other is generated during the work process. See the table below

2) Hazards
A) bonding, clogging filter, servo valve hole
B) Increase the wear of the pump and moving parts
C) Accelerate the aging and deterioration of oil
D) Blocking the oil suction strainer causes cavitation of the pump

3) Preventive measures
Oil tank A is well sealed and dustproof, or a breathing hole with an air filter is installed

During the storage and transportation of finished oil, it is necessary to prevent dust and water

The C system must be equipped with a filtering device to timely remove contaminated particles. It is best to use a filter with an indication signal, and it is best to install a magnetic trap at the bottom of the oil tank.

D Install and regularly inspect, clean the suction strainer of the pump.

Install protective covers or blow air to prevent dust at the sealing points of the oil cylinder and push rod.

2. Can mineral hydraulic oils with the same viscosity be freely interchangeable?

No. Because although they have the same viscosity, the types vary greatly. High pressure systems that require the use of anti wear hydraulic oil must not be replaced with L-HH or L-HL oil, otherwise it will cause premature scrapping and operational failure of the equipment oil pump. In cold and severe cold areas, the L-HV and L-HS oil required for hydraulic systems cannot be replaced with L-HM oil of the same viscosity level, otherwise it will cause difficulties in cold starting and other issues.

Second. Gear Oil problems and solutions

1. What are the main forms of gear failure?
The main forms of gear failure include tooth breakage, wear, pitting, and bonding.

2. What factors lead to deterioration of industrial gear oil?
The internal reason is that the stability of the Base Oil has a certain limit, and it deteriorates with storage and use time. Various additives added to improve the comprehensive performance of the oil gradually consume and deteriorate during use. Generally speaking, this deterioration is very slow, often taking 2 years or more.

3. What is the deterioration of industrial gear oil?
① Changes in appearance. The colors darken and blend. There are obvious abrasive particles, mechanical impurities, and oil sludge that cause emulsification.

② Oil with viscosity index improvers due to mechanical shear causes a decrease in viscosity, while oil oxidation and emulsified sludge cause an increase in viscosity

③ In oil products containing high acid value additives, the decrease in acid value during initial use indicates the consumption of additives, and the increase in acid value during later stages is a result of oxidation producing acidic products.

④ As the water content increases, the anti emulsification performance deteriorates, and the hydrolysis of extreme pressure agents affects lubrication and may cause tooth surface pitting and bonding.

⑤ The increase in insoluble substances of benzalkane (petroleum ether) is a result of oxidation products and metal dust pollution caused by long-term use of oil products at high temperatures.

Third. Solution to the problem of using turbine oil

1. Can different types of turbine oil be mixed?
Different types of turbine oil cannot be mixed, such as meeting the requirements of L_ TSA turbine oil and L-TCD turbine oil cannot be mixed.

2. Why measure the demulsification performance of steam turbine units?
Demulsification degree is an important indicator for steam turbine lubricating oil. It is the measurement of the time for oil-water separation under specified conditions. Due to abnormal system conditions during the operation of a steam turbine or water turbine, water or steam may enter the oil and cause emulsification. In order to resist the demulsification caused by water on the oil, turbine oil is required to have a certain degree of demulsification ability to ensure long-term use of the oil in the equipment. A short demulsification time indicates that the emulsion can quickly undergo demulsification, separating oil and water. Conversely, the opposite is true, so the shorter the demulsification time of the oil, the better.

Fourth. Compressor oil problems and solutions

1. Is the flash point of lubricating oil related to the cause of explosion?

Except for mechanical factors, if the cause of compressor explosion is caused by oil, it is often due to severe carbon deposition in the oil, which blocks the compressor exhaust hole and causes a sharp increase in internal pressure.

According to research, the flash point of lubricating oil is not related to the cause of explosion, as in order to ignite the oil mist and oil gas, its temperature must reach a self ignition point of 2-3 times or more than the flash point.

2. How to prevent fire and explosion for compressors?

To prevent the compressor from catching fire and exploding, the following points should be noted for compressors lubricated with oil:

① Select appropriate lubricating oil;

② Regularly clean the exhaust system;

③ Pay attention to the operating methods;

④ Strict maintenance and regular maintenance;

⑤ Using appropriate oil mist separation methods;

⑥ Using high-performance aftercoolers for air cooling is a simple and effective method of fire and explosion prevention.

3. How to determine the oil change period and oil change indicators for compressor oil?

The oil change period of compressor oil varies depending on the construction form of the compressor, the medium of the compressor, operating conditions, lubricating oil method, and the quality of the lubricating oil. It is impractical to specify how many times to change the oil during operation. The oil change time can only be determined based on the conditions at that time. During use, regular samples should be taken to observe the color and cleanliness of the oil, and the viscosity, acid value, n-hexane content, and physicochemical properties of the oil should be analyzed regularly.

If one of the following situations occurs, oil change should be considered:
1. The color of the oil appears green, or the color number is deepened by 4 levels

2. Acid value exceeding 0.5mgkoK/g

3. Changes in viscosity exceeding 15%

4. N-Heptane cannot exceed 0.5%

Fifth. Lubricating grease usage issues and solutions
Can different types of lubricating greases be mixed for use?

If the type of base oil is the same, such as petroleum lubricants or other greases of the same base oil, greases made from different soap bases or thickeners, it is generally not suitable to simply mix them. For certain types of grease, such as calcium based grease, sodium based grease, or lithium based grease and composite lithium based grease, they can be mixed and used together, generally without causing significant performance changes or affecting use.

However, extreme pressure lubricating grease contains various active components, and when mixed with each other, additives may interfere with each other, resulting in poor colloidal or mechanical stability of the grease and affecting its performance. Before mixing different types of grease, the performance of the mixed grease should be measured, and it can be used only after confirming that there is no significant impact.
